Cal v. Portland State … Waxing … & Waning …

.

Waxing

QB Jared Goff had another excellent outing against the Portland State Vikings

… passing for 485 yards (exceeded in Cal history only by Pat Barnes 503 yards in a 1996 4 overtime game against Arizona) and 2 touchdowns …

Jared Goff Passing

… and running for another …

… ten different Bears had receptions, with WR Bryce Treggs leading the way with 8 catches for 121 yards …

WR Maurice Harris had just one catch for 10 yards … but …

… it was a leaping, one-handed grab for a touchdown that earned Harris the #1 “Play of the Day” on tonight’s ESPN SportsCenter

… see it here:  http://gif.mocksession.com/2013/09/harris-one-hand-td-catch/

WR Richard Rodgers had 4 receptions for 100 yards, including a 75 yard touchdown catch …

… and another true freshman, HB Khalfani Muhammad, led the Bears in total yardage, rushing for 73 yards on 13 carries and grabbing 4 passes for 85, to give him 158 yards in total offense …

Khalfani Muhammad

Khalfani Muhammad

… the Bears ran 95 plays, racking up 616 yards in total offense and 31 first downs, while scoring 37 points …

… the Cal offense, which will only improve over the next three years — Goff & Muhammad are true freshmen … Treggs, Harris, WR Chris Harper & HB Daniel Lasco are all sophomores … and Rodgers & HB Brendan Bigelow are juniors …

Jared Goff & Brendan Bigelow

… all of which is enough to make Cal fans salivate …

… and …

Waning

… the entire defense, which gave up 30 points, 553 yards in total offense and 21 first downs …

Portland State had 434 yards and 17 first downs in the first half …

First Half Stats

First Half Stats

… the secondary, which was hampered by the loss of S Avery Sebastian, who had achilles tendon surgery this week and is out for the year …

… on the second play after the opening kickoff, Portland State burned the Cal secondary for an 81 yard touchdown pass …

… and the Cal run defense, which was gashed for 245 yards rushing on 39 carries by Portland State

Cal Defense

Cal Defense

… that’s 6.3 yards per carry …

… which won’t cut it against Ohio State next week …

… or Oregon in three weeks.

.

Next Up

… the Ohio State Buckeyes

… who come to Berkeley riding a 14 game winning streak and ranked #3 in the country …

… and who finished the 2012 season undefeated at 12-0, including a 35-28 win over the Bears in a game that Cal could (and probably should) have won …

.

Predictions:  Reluctantly …

… unless the defense steps it up significantly against the Buckeyes, this year’s game will not be as close …

… so, a win over Ohio State seems unlikely …

… even if Goff can pass for more than 400 yards for a third game in a row, which also seems unlikely.

    Update:

Identifying the lackluster running game and the porous defense as deficiencies in Cal’s performance against Portland State was no stroke of genius. In his post-game comments, Coach Dykes cited both as in need of improvement if Cal hopes to compete well against Ohio State this week. See:

HB Daniel Lasco missed the Portland State game with a sore hamstring. Khalfani Muhammad filled in and showed flashes of the speed which made him a back-to-back state sprint champion (winning both the 100 and 200 meter championships two years in a row).

QB Jared Goff has not only shown poise on the field, but in dealing with the media as well. See this Bleacher Report article and scroll down to Goff’s interview:
